LaNDMarK PRESS

Music for Early Instruments and Voice – This music falls into three categories:

  1. The Bach Series – Many of Mach’s works for organ fit the recorder ensemble perfectly. The ranges of the parts, and the distribution of the voices, all work with a minimum of tinkering. Ensemble skills are needed such as the effortless passing back and forth of quick notes between voices.

  2. The Spanish Renaissance Series - selections from the outstanding scared vocal music. From the mid-fifteenth through the early seventeenth century, Spanish Renaissance composers successful shaped their own individualized sound that has variously been described as inspirational, intense, poignant, serene and passionate. The vocal range & expressive harmonic vocabulary are particularly well suited for recorder ensembles. The rhythmic syncopations, contrapuntal variety, & long phrasing, offer certain challenges yet remain accessible to a wide level of playing abilities.

  3. Art of the Netherlands Series – The masses, motets and other pieces composed for sacred services and the secular forms in the mid-fifteenth to sixteenth centuries, offer us an almost limitless repertoire by the finest composers in one of music’s finest hours. Further, while they are musically complex and fascinating in their exposition of rhythm and melody, they are technically within the abilities of a wide range of singers and players.

This Press was founded in 1997 by Mark and LaNoue Davenport, in large part for the purpose of publishing LaNoue’s wonderful catalogue of recorder editions. In the later part of the 20th century LaNoue was a very active player in the Early Music movement in the US. He died in November, 1999 leaving his son, Mark with a wealth of material. Much of the last ten years of his life were consumed with editorial ventures.
